I have to believe in a world outside my own mind. I have to believe that when my eyes are closed, the world’s still there. We all need mirrors to remind ourselves who we are. I’m no different. – Christopher Nolan Memento 2000

In the film Memento, an accident leaves the protagonist unable to retain memories over 10 minutes. He attempts to salvage his lost memories from photographs and notes to himself, documenting his discoveries about his past. While his photographs prove that the events they document actually took place, however, they fail to serve as proof of any kind of truth.
Seung Woo Back’s Memento is a collaborative work between the artist and 7 other participants selected at random, who are asked to select 8 photographs each out of the 50,000 the artist collected in American flea markets and to write notes about them. These personal snapshots that started out as mementos of genuine meaning to someone at one time devolve into anonymous postcards when thus reconstructed by strangers.
